Tôi nghe như vầy:
Một thời đức Phật trú tại vườn Ni-câu-lưu, tại Ca-tỳ-la-việt, Thích-sí-sấu, cùng với năm trăm vị Đại Tỳ-kheo. Bấy giờ Đại Ái Đạo Kiều-đàm-di đi đến chỗ Thế Tôn, đảnh lễ sát chân, bạch Thế Tôn:
“Ước nguyện Thế Tôn sinh mạng hằng được thủ hộ để giáo hóa lâu dài những kẻ ngu tối.”
Thế Tôn bảo:
“Cù-đàm-di, không nên nói với Như Lai những lời như vậy. Tuổi thọ của Như Lai lâu vô cùng, mạng hằng được thủ hộ.”
Bấy giờ, Đại Ái Đạo Cù-đàm-di liền nói kệ này:
Làm sao lễ Tối thắng,
Đấng thế gian Tối tôn,
Để đoạn tất cả nghi?
Do vậy nói lời này.
Bấy giờ, Thế Tôn đáp lại Cù-đàm-di bằng bài kệ này:
Tinh tấn ý khó khuyết;
Thường có tâm dũng mãnh;
Xem Thanh văn bình đẳng:
Đó là lễ Như Lai.
Rồi Đại Ái Đạo bạch Thế Tôn:
“Từ đây về sau con sẽ lễ Thế Tôn. Nay Như Lai dạy xem tất cả chúng sanh với ý không tăng tổn. Trên trời, trong cõi người, cùng A-tu-la, Như Lai là tối thượng.”
Khi ấy Như Lai chấp nhận những gì Đại Ái Đạo đã nói. Bà liền từ chỗ ngồi đứng dậy, đảnh lễ sát chân, rồi thối lui ra về.
Bấy giờ, Thế Tôn bảo các Tỳ-kheo:
“Trong hàng Thanh văn của Ta, đệ tử hiều biết rộng rãi đệ nhất, chính là Đại Ái Đạo.”
Các Tỳ-kheo sau khi nghe những gì đức Phật dạy, hoan hỷ phụng hành.
聞如是：
一時，佛在釋翅瘦迦毘羅越尼 T 0592c11拘留園中，與大比丘五百人俱。
爾時，大愛道 T 0592c12瞿曇彌便往至世尊所，頭面禮足，白世尊 T 0592c13曰：「願世尊長化愚冥，恒護生命。」
世尊告曰： T 0592c14「瞿曇彌！不應向如來作是言：『如來延壽 T 0592c15無窮，恒護其命。』」
是時，大愛道瞿曇彌即說此 T 0592c16偈：

「云何禮最勝， 世間無與等， T 0592c18
能斷一切疑， 由是說此語？」
T 0592c19爾時，世尊復以偈報瞿曇彌曰：
T 0592c20
「精進意難缺， 恒有勇猛心； T 0592c21
平等視聲聞， 此則禮如來。」
T 0592c22是時，大愛道白世尊曰：「自今以後當禮世 T 0592c23尊，如來今勅禮一切眾生，意無增減。天 T 0592c24上、人中及阿須倫，如來為最上。」
是時，世尊可 T 0592c25大愛道所說。即從坐起，頭面禮足，便退而 T 0592c26去。
爾時，世尊告諸比丘：「我聲聞中第一弟子 T 0592c27廣識多知，所謂大愛道是。」
是時，諸比丘聞 T 0592c28佛所說，歡喜奉行。
T 0592c29 Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was staying, together with a large number of bhikṣus, viz. five hundred persons altogether, among the Śākyans at Kapilavastu, in the Nyagrodha Park.
Then Mahāprajāpatī Gautamī went to the Exalted One. She bowed her head at his feet and said to him: “I hope for a long time the Exalted One will bring the ignorant and deluded to their senses, and may his life never be endangered!”
“Gautamī”, responded the Exalted One, “such words in regard to the Tathāgata are not appropriate. The Tathāgata can prolong his life-span which will not be short, and his life will never be really in danger.”
Now Mahāprajāpatī Gautamī improvised the following verses:
“How can one revere him who is foremost,
who is unparalleled in the world?
He is capable of removing all doubts—
That is why these words of veneration are uttered.”
The Exalted One in turn responded to Gautamī with these verses:
“Reverence for the Tathāgata implies
this effort and steadfastness.
A mind that is ever more courageous
and which looks upon Disciples as equals (tulya).”
In reply to the Exalted One Mahāprajāpatī declared: “Hence-forth the Exalted One should be revered for his the Tathāgata’s, insisting on regarding all living beings with a mind free from the discriminatory concepts of upper and lower (adhika-nyūna) classes. Among the heavenly beings, men … and Asuras, the Tathāgata is supreme.”
The Exalted One acknowledged what Mahāprajāpatī had said, and she rose from her seat, bowed down… and left.
The Exalted One said to the bhikṣus: “Among my disciples it is Mahāprajāpatī who is foremost in respect of broad-mindedness and extensive awareness.”
Having heard the Buddha’s words, the bhikṣus were pleased and respectfully applied themselves to practice.
