Tôi nghe như vầy:
Một thời đức Phật trú tại vườn Cấp Cô Độc, rừng cây Kỳ-đà, tại nước Xá-vệ. Bấy giờ, Thế Tôn bảo các Tỳ-kheo:
“Có một con người mà mất hẳn ở thế gian, thì nhiều người sẽ ôm lòng sầu lo; khắp Trời Người mất cả bóng che. Một con người ấy là ai? Đó là đức Như Lai, A-la-hán, Chánh đẳng giác. Đó gọi là có một con người mà mất hẳn ở thế gian, nhân loại phần nhiều ôm lòng sầu lo; khắp Trời Người mất cả bóng che. Vì sao vậy? Vì nếu đức Như Lai diệt tận ở đời, thì ba mươi bảy phẩm cũng lại diệt tận.
“Cho nên các Tỳ-kheo, thường nên cung kính đối với Phật. Vì vậy, này các Tỳ-kheo, hãy học điều này.”
Các Tỳ-kheo sau khi nghe những gì Phật dạy, hoan hỷ phụng hành.
聞如是：
一時，佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨 T 0561b27園。
爾時，世尊告諸比丘：「若有一人沒盡於 T 0561b28世，人民之類多懷愁憂，天及人民普失廕 T 0561b29覆。云何為一人？所謂多薩阿竭、阿羅呵、三耶 T 0561c01三佛。是謂一人沒盡於世，人民之類多懷 T 0561c02愁憂，天及人民普失廕覆。所以然者，若多 T 0561c03薩阿竭於世滅盡，三十七品亦復滅盡。是故， T 0561c04諸比丘！常當恭敬於佛。如是，諸比丘！當作 T 0561c05是學。」
爾時，諸比丘聞佛所說，歡喜奉行。
T 0561c06 SC 1Thus I have heard: One time, the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in Jeta’s Grove of Śrāvastī.
SC 2It was then that the Bhagavān addressed the monks: “There’s one person whose disappearance from the world makes all sorts of people feel anguished. Gods and humans everywhere are lost in darkness then. Who is that one person? He is called the Tathāgata, the Arhat, and the Correctly and Perfectly Awakened One. He is known as the one person whose disappearance from the world makes all sorts of people feel anguished. Gods and humans everywhere are lost in darkness then. Why is that? When the Tathāgata disappears from the world, the thirty-seven factors of the path disappear.
SC 3“Therefore, monks, always pay respect to the Buddha. Thus, monks, you should train yourselves.”
SC 4When the monks heard what the Buddha taught, they rejoiced and approved.
