Verse 35.4Người thiền định, vô nhiễm;
Hành vi của người ấy không có ô nhiễm;
Trong người ấy không khởi lên sự tìm cầu cao hơn;
Thật là một Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.5Mặt trời rực rỡ ban ngày;
Mặt trăng chiếu sáng ban đêm;
Chiến sĩ rạng rỡ trong quân đội;
Trong thiền định, người tu hành tỏa sáng.
Đức Phật xuất hiện trong thế gian,
Chiếu sáng để xua tan bóng tối khắp nơi.
Verse 35.6Người ta không phải là Phạm Chí chỉ vì đầu cạo trọc;
Cũng không phải là Phạm Chí vì người ấy tụng thần chú.
Chính người từ bỏ mọi điều ác
Mới có thể được gọi là Sa-môn.
Verse 35.7Phạm Chí là người thoát ly khỏi điều ác;
Phạm Chí là người bước vào sự ngay thẳng.
Khi đã từ bỏ những hành vi ô nhiễm của mình.
Người ấy được xem là đã xuất gia.
Verse 35.8Nếu người ấy an tịnh đối với điều dễ chịu
Và trong tâm không chấp trước điều gì
—Khi đã từ bỏ và sửa đổi [sự chấp trước]
Người ấy đoạn diệt mọi khổ đau.
Verse 35.9Người mà thân, khẩu và ý
Đều thanh tịnh không có lỗi lầm;
Người chế ngự trong ba hành động này,
Thật là một Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.10Nếu tâm bạn thấu hiểu
Giáo Pháp của Đức Phật;
Hãy quán chiếu tâm mình và nương tựa vào chính mình,
[Như một Phạm Chí] tự thanh lọc bằng nước.
Verse 35.11Không phải vì dòng dõi hay tóc bện.
Mà người ta được gọi là Phạm Chí
Người mà hành vi chân thật và ngay chính,
Người ấy thanh tịnh, và điều này khiến người ấy trở thành một bậc đức hạnh.
Verse 35.12Tóc bện của ngươi để làm gì, hỡi kẻ vô trí!
Y phục bằng rơm của ngươi để làm gì?
Khi bên trong ngươi vẫn còn chấp trước,
Thì sự từ bỏ bên ngoài có ích gì?
Verse 35.13Người mặc y phục thô sơ,
Người tự mình thực hành Pháp,
Người thiền định nơi ẩn dật,
—Thật là một Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.14Đức Phật không dạy người ta
Tự đề cao mình và tự xưng:
Người phù hợp với chân lý, và không lừa dối,
Mới có thể được gọi là Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.16Người đã cắt đứt dòng luân hồi,
Người có nhẫn nại và siêu việt [thế gian],
Người tự giác ngộ và thoát khỏi hầm hố;
Thật là một Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.17Người mà khi bị lăng mạ và đánh đập,
Vẫn nhẫn chịu một cách lặng lẽ không giận dữ;
Người có sức mạnh của sự kiên nhẫn;
Thật là một Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.18Người mà khi bị tấn công,
Không làm gì khác ngoài việc giữ gìn giới luật của mình;
Người duy trì oai nghi đúng đắn, tự chủ;
Thật là một Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.19Người từ bỏ các ác Pháp trong tâm mình,
Như rắn lột bỏ lớp da;
Và không bị dục vọng làm ô nhiễm.
Thật là một Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.20Người nhận ra đời là khổ đau,
Và do đó chấm dứt mọi ý nghĩ [dục lạc];
Người có thể đặt xuống gánh nặng;
Thật là một Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.21Người thấu hiểu và có trí tuệ sâu sắc;
Người phân biệt được con đường đúng và sai;
Và người đã đạt đến mục tiêu cao [nhất];
Được gọi là Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.22Người có thể từ bỏ đời sống gia đình,
Và không sợ hãi gia đình;
Người có ít nhu cầu và ít dục vọng;
Thật là một Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.23Người giải thoát chúng sinh,
Người không nuôi dưỡng ý nghĩ sát hại,
Người không gây khổ não cho bất kỳ ai,
Thật là một Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.24Người tránh xa tranh chấp,
Người không oán giận khi bị xúc phạm,
Người thân thiện với kẻ thù nghịch;
Thật là một Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.25Người loại bỏ tham, sân, si,
Mạn và các điều ác khác,
Như rắn lột bỏ lớp da;
Thật là một Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.26Người đã đoạn lìa các mối liên hệ thế gian;
Người không nói lời thô ác;
Người cẩn thận quán sát Bát Chánh Đạo;
Thật là một Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.27Những gì thế gian xem là tốt hay xấu,
Những gì dài, ngắn, dày, mỏng
—Người ấy không lấy bất cứ thứ gì không được cho;
Người như vậy là một Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.28Hành vi của người ấy thanh tịnh trong đời này,
Thì không thể có ô nhiễm trong đời sau.
[Như vậy] không thực hành bất kỳ [ác Pháp nào].
—Người ấy được gọi là Phạm Chí.
Verse 35.2
Verse 35.1Stop the stream [of craving] and cross over,
Be desireless like a brāhma;
Having known the exhaustion of conditionings,
One is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.2By means of the non-dual dharma,
He is purified and crosses the sea;
All his fetters of desire are removed
—Such a one is a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.3He who is at ease with other and no-other;
For whom [both] other, [not] other, are avoid;
He who gives up sensual craving;
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.4He who is meditative, stainless;
Whose deeds are corruption-free;
In whom there does not arise higher seeking;
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.5The sun glows by day;
the moon shines by night;
The warrior shines in the army;
In meditation glows the spiritual cultivator.
The Buddha appears in the world,
Illuminating to dispel darkness everywhere.
Verse 35.6One is not a brāhmaṇa on account of the shaven head;
Nor is one a brāhmaṇa because one utters mantras.
It is one who gives up all evil
Whom may be called a spiritual cultivator.
Verse 35.7A brāhmaṇa is one who exits from evil;
A brāhmaṇa is one who enters rectitude.
Having renounced one’s own defiled deeds.
One is regarded as having left home.
Verse 35.8If one is calmed with regard to the pleasant
And at hearty attaches to naught
—Having [thus] renounced and rectified [attachment]
One extinguishes all sufferings.
Verse 35.9He whose body, speech and mind
Are pure without any fault;
Who is restrained in this threefold action,
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.10If your mind understands
The Teachings of the Buddha;
Look into your mind and take refuge in yourself,
[As a brāhmaṇa] purifies himself with water.
Verse 35.11Neither on account of clan nor matted hairs.
Is one called a brāhmaṇa
He whose deeds are truthful and righteous,
He is pure, and this makes him a virtuous one.
Verse 35.12What for is your contrived hair, witless one!
What for your straw clothes?
When within you remain attached,
What’s the use of external renunciation?
Verse 35.13He who wears poor clothes,
Who personally practices the dharma,
Who meditates on retreat,
—Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.14The Buddha does not teach one
To elevate oneself and make self-claims:
One according with truth, and undeceitful,
May be called a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.16He who has cut off the river of transmigration,
Who has forbearance and transcends [the world],
Who is self-awakened and out of the moats;
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.17He who in the face of being abused and hit,
Endures quietly without anger;
Who has the power of patience;
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.18He who, in the face of being attacked,
Does naught but remains mindful of his precepts;
Who maintains proper postures, self-controlled;
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.19He who abandons evil dharmas in his mind,
Like a snake shedding its skin;
And is not tainted by desire.
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.20He who realizes life to be unsatisfactory,
And thereby ceases to have [sensual] thoughts;
Who can lay down the burden;
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.21He who understands and has profound wisdom;
Who distinguishes the right and wrong paths;
And who has reached the high[est] goal;
Is called a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.22He who can give up the household life,
And has no fear of the household;
Who has few needs and little desire;
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.23He who frees living things,
Who harbours no thoughts of killing,
Who causes afflictions to no-one,
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.24He who avoids disputes,
Who resents not when offended,
Who is friendly to the hostile;
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.25He who removes greed, anger, delusion,
Conceit and other evil,
Like a snake shedding its skin;
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.26He who is cut off from worldly associations;
Who utters no harsh words;
Who carefully investigates the Eight-fold Path;
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.27Those considered by the world as good or bad,
Those which are long, short thick thin
—He takes not [any of them] which is not given;
Such a one is a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.28One’s deeds being pure in this life,
There can be no defilement in the life after.
[Thus] without practicing any [evil dharmas].
—One is called a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.29Renouncing the body, without a supporting basis,
Not reciting [the doctrines] of other disciplines;
He attains the Deathless Cessation.
Such a one is a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.30He who, with regard to good and evil,
Has got rid of both these deeds,
Free from sorrow and dust,
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.31He whose mind is joyful, stainless
Like the moon in its fullness,
Who is free from defamation,
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.32Seeing that the fools, in coming and going,
Fall into the moats to suffer;
He desires to cross over the other shore alone,
Disregarding the words of others.
Only he in whom [birth] ceases and arises no more,
May be called a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.33He who has cut off lust,
Who is homeless, desireless,
Whose lust for existence is destroyed
May be called a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.34He who is away from the uman community
And does not fall into the celestial community.
—Not going to any community whatsoever;
May be called a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.35He who has given up pleasure and displeasure;
Who is extinguished, without heat remnant;
Heroic, defeating the whole world;
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.36He for whom birth is no more,
And at death is without destination;
Who is awakened, happy and detached;
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.37He who has transcended the five destinies;
Whose destination [at death] cannot be known;
Who has completely destroyed all habits;
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.38He for whom, before and after,
And in the middle, there is naught;
Without holding on, without discarding;
He is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.39The most heroic, the most fearless,
—He who is self-released,
Who is enlightened, and whose mind is unshaken,
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
Verse 35.40He who knows his past lives,
And his previous transmigrations:
Who has the means for ending birth;
Whose insight penetrates the highest profundity;
Who is wise like a silent-one;
Is indeed a brāhmaṇa.
