Vua lại hỏi Na-tiên: "Các vị tỳ-kheo nói rằng: 'Nếu ai làm ác nghiệp trên đời suốt trăm năm, vào lúc lâm chung, chỉ cần khởi một niệm nghĩ đến Phật, sau khi chết sẽ được sanh lên cõi trời.' Lời ấy tôi không thể tin. Lại nói rằng: 'Ai giết hại một sinh vật sẽ đọa địa ngục.' Lời ấy tôi cũng không thể tin."
Na-tiên hỏi vua: "Giả sử có người bỏ một viên đá nhỏ xuống nước. Viên đá nhỏ sẽ nổi trên mặt nước hay chìm xuống?"
"Viên đá nhỏ sẽ chìm."
"Nếu đặt một trăm hòn đá lớn lên thuyền, thuyền có chìm không?"
"Không, thuyền sẽ không chìm."
Bấy giờ Na-tiên nói: "Như trăm hòn đá lớn trên thuyền mà không chìm, người có một niệm nghĩ đến Phật sẽ không đọa địa ngục, mà được sanh lên cõi trời dù trong quá khứ đã làm điều ác. Viên đá nhỏ chìm giống như những người làm ác mà không biết Pháp của Đức Phật. Khi chết, họ sẽ đọa địa ngục."
"Hay thay, Na-tiên!"
王 T 0717b12復問那先。卿曹沙門言。人在世間作惡。至百 T 0717b13歲臨欲死時念佛。死後者皆得生天上。我不 T 0717b14信是語。復言殺一生死即當入泥犁中。我不 T 0717b15信是語。那先問王。如人持小石置水上。石浮 T 0717b16耶沒耶。王言其石沒。那先言如令持百枚大 T 0717b17石置船上。其船寧沒不。王言不沒。那先言船 T 0717b18中百枚大石因船故不得沒。人雖有本惡。一 T 0717b19時念佛。用是故不入泥犁中。便得生天上。其 T 0717b20小石沒者如人作惡。不知佛經死後便入泥 T 0717b21犁中。王言善哉。
The king asked Nāgasena again, “Your monks say, ‘If anyone who does evil deeds in the world for a hundred years, at the time of dying, he will be reborn in heaven after death if he has even one thought of the Buddha.’ These words I cannot believe. Again they say, ‘He who should take the life of a living being would fall into the hells.’ These words I cannot believe either.”
Nāgasena asked the king, “Suppose a man were to put a small stone into the water. Would the small stone float on the surface of the water or sink into the water?”
“The small stone would sink.”
“If a hundred large stones were put into a boat, would the boat sink?”
“No, it would not sink.”
Then Nāgasena said, “As a hundred large stones in a boat would not sink, a man with one thought of the Buddha will not fall into the hells, but be born in the heavens even though he had done evil deeds in the past. The small stone that sinks is like people who do evil, but do not know the Dharma of the Buddha. When they die they will fall into the hells.”
“Excellent, Nāgasena.”
