Vua nói: “Bò, ngựa và sáu loại gia súc có trí tuệ không?”
“Bò ngựa, sáu loại gia súc có trí tuệ, nhưng tâm trí chúng khác nhau. Đại vương có bao giờ thấy người thợ gặt chưa? Tay trái họ nắm lúa thành bó, tay phải cầm liềm, rồi dùng liềm cắt lúa. Bậc trí đoạn trừ tham ái, cũng giống như cắt lúa vậy.”
“Lành thay, Tôn giả Na-tiên.”
王言人以一心念正法善故後世 T 0707b13不復生耶。那先言人以一心念正法念善智 T 0707b14慧及餘善事故後世不復生。王言人以一心 T 0707b15念正法善與智慧是二事其義寧同不。那先 T 0707b16言其義各異不同。王問那先牛馬六畜頗有 T 0707b17智無有智。那先言牛馬六畜各自有智其心 T 0707b18不同。那先言王曾見穫麥者不左手持麥右 T 0707b19手刈之。那先言智慧之人斷絕愛欲。譬如穫 T 0707b20麥。王言善哉。
“Revered Sir, of those who are not reborn, is it due to their whole-hearted consideration of saddharma and virtue?”
“Your Majesty, by whole-hearted consideration of saddharma, virtue, wisdom and other good qualities, one will not be reborn.”
“As for the whole-hearted consideration of saddharma and wisdom, are the meanings of the two terms the same?”
“Certainly not, their meanings are quite different.”
The king said, “Do the oxen, horses and the six kinds of domestic animals, have wisdom or not?”
“Oxen and horses, the six kinds of domestic animals have wisdom, but their minds are different. Have you, your majesty, ever seen the reaper? With their left hands, they grasp the barley into a bunch, and taking the sickles into their right hands, they cut the barley with it. Wise men cut off their lustful craving, just like cutting off the barley.”
“Excellent, Nāgasena.”
