Một thuở, Đức Phật trú tại Sāvatthī, trong Kỳ Viên, tịnh xá ông Cấp Cô Độc.
Lúc bấy giờ, vua Pasenadi nước Kosala đang ở trên lầu hoàng cung cùng hoàng hậu Mallikā.
Vua Pasenadi hỏi hoàng hậu Mallikā:
“Này Mallikā, có ai thân yêu với bà hơn chính bản thân bà không?”
“Thưa đại vương, không có ai.
Nhưng có ai thân yêu với đại vương hơn chính đại vương không?”
“Đối với ta cũng vậy, Mallikā, không có ai.”
Rồi vua Pasenadi nước Kosala đi xuống lầu, đến gặp Đức Phật, đảnh lễ, ngồi qua một bên, và thuật lại sự việc.
Rồi hiểu rõ sự việc này, nhân dịp ấy Đức Phật thốt lên lời cảm hứng:
“Đã dùng tâm khám phá mọi phương,
không tìm thấy ai thân yêu hơn chính mình.
Người khác cũng vậy, ai cũng yêu quý bản thân;
nên ai mong tự biết mình thì không nên hại ai.”
Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
Tena kho pana samayena rājā pasenadi kosalo mallikāya deviyā saddhiṁ uparipāsādavaragato hoti.
Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo mallikaṁ deviṁ etadavoca:
“atthi nu kho te, mallike, kocañño attanā piyataro”ti?
“Natthi kho me, mahārāja, kocañño attanā piyataro.
Tuyhaṁ pana, mahārāja, atthañño koci attanā piyataro”ti?
“Mayhampi kho, mallike, natthañño koci attanā piyataro”ti.
Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo pāsādā orohitvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
“Idhāhaṁ, bhante, mallikāya deviyā saddhiṁ uparipāsādavaragato mallikaṁ deviṁ etadavocaṁ:
‘atthi nu kho te, mallike, kocañño attanā piyataro’ti?
Evaṁ vutte, mallikā devī maṁ etadavoca:
‘natthi kho me, mahārāja, kocañño attanā piyataro.
Tuyhaṁ pana, mahārāja, atthañño koci attanā piyataro’ti?
Evaṁ vutte, ahaṁ, bhante, mallikaṁ deviṁ etadavocaṁ:
‘mayhampi kho, mallike, natthañño koci attanā piyataro’”ti.
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:
“Sabbā disā anuparigamma cetasā,
Nevajjhagā piyataramattanā kvaci;
Evaṁ piyo puthu attā paresaṁ,
Tasmā na hiṁse paramattakāmo”ti.

SC 1Thus I heard: At one time the Gracious One was dwelling near Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Wood, at Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. Then at that time the Kosalan King Pasenadi had gone to the top of the royal palace with Queen Mallikā. Then the Kosalan King Pasenadi said this to Queen Mallikā: “Is there anyone, Mallikā, you love more than yourself?”
SC 2“There is no one, Great King, I love more than myself. But is there, Great King, anyone you love more than yourself?”
SC 3“For me also, Mallikā, there is no one I love more than myself.”
SC 4Then the Kosalan King Pasenadi having come down from the palace went to the Gracious One, and after going and worshipping the Gracious One, he sat down on one side. While sat on one side the Kosalan King Pasenadi said this to the Gracious One:
SC 5“Here, reverend Sir, having gone to the top of the royal palace with Queen Mallikā I said this to Queen Mallikā: ‘Is there anyone, Mallikā, you love more than yourself?’
SC 6When that was said, Queen Mallikā said this to me: ‘There is no one, Great King, I love more than myself. But is there, Great King, anyone you love more than yourself?’
SC 7When that was said, reverend Sir, I said this to Queen Mallikā: ‘For me also, Mallikā, there is no one I love more than myself.’ ”
SC 8Then the Gracious One, having understood the significance of it, on that occasion uttered this exalted utterance:
SC 9“Having gone around in all directions with the mind,
There is surely no one found who is loved more than oneself.
SC 10“In the same way others each love themselves,
Therefore one who cares for himself should not harm another.”
