Vi-n 1 Một thời Thế Tôn trú ở Sāvatthi, Jetavana tại vườn ông Anāthapiṇḍika (Cấp Cô Ðộc).
Vi-n 2 Lúc bấy giờ Tôn giả Vangìsa, chứng quả A-la-hán không bao lâu, thọ hưởng giải thoát lạc, ngay trong lúc ấy, nói lên những bài kệ này:
Thuở trước ta mê thơ,
Bộ hành khắp mọi nơi,
Từ làng này, thành này,
Qua làng khác, thành khác,
Ta thấy bậc Chánh Giác,
Tín thành ta sanh khởi.
Ngài thuyết pháp cho ta,
Về uẩn, xứ và giới,
Sau khi nghe Chánh pháp,
Ta bỏ nhà xuất gia.
Vì hạnh phúc số đông,
Vì thấy đạo hành đạo,
Cho Tỷ-kheo Tăng-Ni,
Bậc Mâu-ni giác ngộ,
Ngài đã chấp nhận con,
Ðược thành đạo với Ngài,
Con chứng đạt Ba minh,
Hành trì theo Phật dạy.
Con biết được đời trước,
Chứng thiên nhãn thanh tịnh,
Ba minh, thần thông lực,
Chứng đạt tha tâm thông.
Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā vaṅgīso sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā vaṅgīso aciraarahattappatto hutvā vimuttisukhaṁ paṭisaṁvedī tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
“Kāveyyamattā vicarimha pubbe,
Gāmā gāmaṁ purā puraṁ;
Athaddasāma sambuddhaṁ,
Saddhā no upapajjatha.
So me dhammamadesesi,
khandhāyatanadhātuyo;
Tassāhaṁ dhammaṁ sutvāna,
pabbajiṁ anagāriyaṁ.
Bahunnaṁ vata atthāya,
bodhiṁ ajjhagamā muni;
Bhikkhūnaṁ bhikkhunīnañca,
ye niyāmagataddasā.
Svāgataṁ vata me āsi,
mama buddhassa santike;
Tisso vijjā anuppattā,
kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ.
Pubbenivāsaṁ jānāmi,
Dibbacakkhuṁ visodhitaṁ;
Tevijjo iddhipattomhi,
Cetopariyāyakovido”ti.
Tassuddānaṁ
Nikkhantaṁ arati ceva,
pesalā atimaññanā;
Ānandena subhāsitā,
sāriputtapavāraṇā;
Parosahassaṁ koṇḍañño,
moggallānena gaggarā;
Vaṅgīsena dvādasāti.
Vaṅgīsasaṁyuttaṁ samattaṁ.
At one time Venerable Vaṅgīsa was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
Now at that time Vaṅgīsa had recently attained perfection. While experiencing the bliss of freedom, on that occasion he recited these verses:
“We used to wander, drunk on poetry,
village to village, town to town.
Then we saw the Buddha,
and faith arose in us.
He taught me Dhamma:
the aggregates, sense fields, and elements.
When I heard his teaching
I went forth to homelessness.
It was truly for the benefit of many
that the sage achieved awakening—
for the monks and for the nuns
who see that they’ve reached certainty.
It was so welcome for me
to be in the presence of the Buddha.
I’ve attained the three knowledges,
and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
I know my past lives,
my clairvoyance is purified,
I am master of three knowledges, attained in psychic power,
expert in encompassing the minds of others.”
